June
Prune most evergreens (June through mid July)
Clip back new growth on Yews to keep them compact.
When the young shoot tips (candles) of Fir, Pine and Spruce have elongated, cut them back to control height and width.
Do not cut off the entire shoot as it could eventually kill the tree.
Make sure all newly installed plant material is properly watered. Trees and shrubs will benefit from 1 inch of water each week during the heat of summer.
July:
Flower care…dead head perennials and annuals to continue blooming.
This is a good time to evaluate the garden and determine what should be moved and where additional plants are needed.
You will eventually see if evergreens are stressed by drought, there will be excessive needle drop in Sept.
August:
Continued plant maintenance by proper pruning and fertilizing
Mid to late summer is a time of excessive heat and potential drought. The best way to combat decline in the garden is to plant the right plant in the right place. The knowledgeable people at Donald Pell Gardens are conscientious of all the details that allow for optimum garden success.
